Either I misunderstood something, or you asked an incorrect question and received a similar answer. The opponents are actually determined; each player in a group should play against the player with the same number from another group. Perhaps Yura meant that in case of some non-standard situations, the captains of the two teams can decide together on changing the composition of certain pairs, but that's just my assumption.
