I think he meant that he got lucky with the initial distribution, but things turned out worse for him in the end.
Basically, he wanted to play more aggressively, but the computer he was using was running slowly (around 114-5), and then it returned to its normal speed, and he regained control of his Castle. I decided to take his Castle (a fatal mistake). He used an Archer to eliminate 40 Goblins, and then attacked him on turn 121 with Nagas, 8 Mages, and all the remaining Goblins (they didn't engage on turn 1 because I bought off the attack and bought a Shaman with the remaining army – I didn't have enough money for Nagas). Oh, and when he attacked with Nagas, Mages, and the newly recruited Goblins, he also had a decent army: a mix of units from levels 1-4. During the battle, he used Archers about 10 times, dealing -4 damage to the Mages and -50 damage to the Goblins.
He wanted to place Birds on turn 2 in a Flask, but couldn't. On turn 131, he bought 2 units for 5 coins and sacrificed them. He took the Hive on turn 8 with Vivs. And then attacked 28 Efreet without a Garrison.
If I had played that battle better, my chances would have increased significantly, although they were already there (the hero had 200 mana and all the air units near the main Castle...).

(When he attacked me, I wanted to use Chain Lightning twice, but I was greedy (if I had exchanged the Angel for a Duck and had 3k gold for the army, I could have continued playing, but I rushed and thought they wouldn't kill me=(...)).
