I wouldn't recommend starting with the third installment. One of the side effects of playing it is that many people find it difficult to enjoy other games in the series afterward.

but for you (if you have a good command of English and aren't intimidated by DOS-era graphics), it's best to start with the third game.
There's also a Russian version of the third game. Buka translated all the installments, except for the fifth, which was translated by Nival.
