The Black Blade is a clue. Or perhaps it's the second murder committed by a demon, but either way, the double attack comes before the normal damage.

This seems likely. I was confused by the description of the murder, which says "as if it were a hail of numerous attacks from the Black Blade." But the murders are described differently. It seems that both mages were involved.
