This is only provided in the game for completing quests: for example, a Seer/Guardian requires you to have 100 griffins, and your hero happens to have an army of 100 griffins. In this case, you can give them away and continue without any troops, but any combat encounter will be fatal. In all other cases, this is impossible: no matter what you do, the hero must have at least 1 unit remaining.
