The Fibonacci sequence was well known in ancient India, where it was used in metrical sciences (prosody, in other words, versification), long before it became known in Europe.
A pattern of length n can be constructed by adding S to a pattern of length n-1, or L to a pattern of length n-2; and prosodists showed that the number of patterns of length n is the sum of the two previous numbers in the sequence. Donald Knuth discusses this effect in the book "The Art of Computer Programming".
