Phoenix (Greek: Phoinix, Latin: Phoenix) is a sacred bird in Egyptian mythology that burns itself every 500 years and is reborn from the ashes; a Christian symbol of eternity. It appears on Egyptian coins from the Roman Empire period (see Alexandrian coins) in the form of a crane with a halo of rays and an explanatory inscription "Aion" (Greek: "Eternity").
The Phoenix also appears on the reverse of Roman coins from the late empire; in addition, the Phoenix serves as an attribute of Aeternitas, the Roman personification of eternity. Gold coins minted in Palermo from 1733 (see Doubloon) depicting the Phoenix were named after it, "fenice" (Italian). The Phoenix is the name of a Greek coin from 1828-1831.
