They shouldn't have gone after the Tear of Asch for nothing – they missed out on a big part of the game.

It depends on what the player wants – to finish the game as quickly as possible, or to enjoy it. It's possible to win without the Tear, and it might even be faster, but with the Tear, it's more interesting.
