It seems that's the case... everything works fine for me, but some players experienced crashes, which were resolved by replaying and completing the level. So, it's unclear... try dismissing all red units from everywhere before passing the checkpoint and recruit exactly the number of troops requested. Oh, and after the checkpoint cutscene, go straight to the castle and don't touch or interact with anything along the way; there are scripts tied to the units there.
