You just don't see it, but they've been doing this to each other throughout the game. The main thing is not to get in the way. Only Malik and the heroes from Gerhard's Palace hunt the player. Stay in the castle. If you've captured Ashwick and Gustav's Turn, you'll eventually outlast everyone.
