Pete, thanks for the insightful overview :)
I remember that when I was in Paris, I kept tripping over their homeless people; they really sleep on grates, right on the sidewalk, and it's hard to notice them in the dark, so you end up kicking them :)
I didn't pay attention to the cigarette prices, but... wow, they're expensive.
Regarding food, I think you underestimated the costs. Let's say lunch is 5 euros, but breakfast, dinner, fruit, water, beer... it should be more than 10 euros per day.
We're currently having Euro 2012 in Kyiv. Foreigners are having a great time, and beer in supermarkets costs 50 cents or 1 euro.
In the fan zone, beer costs 15-20 UAH (1.5-2 euros) per half-liter.
In Kyiv, an apartment costs 300 euros.
Transportation (2 types per day) - 1 euro (metro fare is 2 UAH or 0.2 euros) = 30 euros.
Food - 300 euros.
Cigarettes - 1-2 euros.
Gas for the car - 30 km per day = 1000 km per month = 110 euros.
Salary is 1000+ euros, often 2000.
