A little off-topic, something just came to mind...
It happened during the Korean War in 1950-53. American soldiers who were captured were held in a Chinese prison. Apparently, there was one near the border with China. The prison wasn't particularly harsh, and it didn't have any of the stereotypical "Asian horrors." But the soldiers had nothing to do, so they just sat around. Then, the prison administration, wanting to keep the prisoners occupied, suggested they participate in a contest. It wasn't a difficult task; they had to come up with a certain number of arguments supporting the idea of communism. I don't know the specifics, maybe they sang some political songs or something... At first, the Americans refused, but then they gradually got involved. They were given a certain number of cigarettes for winning and participating... and praising communism didn't seem like such a betrayal.
However, when these soldiers returned home after the war, they generally didn't see anything wrong with communism anymore, and some even claimed that American democracy had many flaws compared to communism. It was quite difficult to convince them otherwise, because during their time in prison, they had come up with many arguments in favor of communism and had convinced themselves of the superiority of this system. By the way, it was around this time that the term "brainwashing" appeared.
