HoMM3 HD is a mod (add-on) for the game Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

My assumption was fortunately confirmed: I started playing again from the beginning, generating a new save, saved it, and then simply skipped turns for a month: the game didn't freeze (I could have continued further, but the enemies captured my town, and the hero ran away from them and died a week later).
