I'm not sure, but it seems that when a hero's stats are reset, they level up using the same skill tree as before the reset.

To answer this question accurately, we need to know the mechanism behind the stat reset. I can't think of any other reason right now (except for the obviously absurd one, that you simply didn't notice).
