Situations where it's impossible to determine the rankings based on head-to-head results and overall points after the group stage are common in tournaments. We've been trying for a long time, but haven't been able to come up with a clear and fair additional criterion. Here's our Group I – three players have 3 points each, with equal head-to-head results and a "circular tie." Playing another round could result in another tie; I know from experience that you can play two or three rounds and still get the same result. At least we have some time now, but what if the same situation occurs in another group by June 15th? Therefore, we came up with a system of cross-matches – only one additional match needs to be played, which won't drag on indefinitely and is better than flipping a coin. The downside is that we came up with it late in the group stage, didn't warn the players in advance, and didn't think about what to do if it happens in one group. That's my fault; I'm slow to think... We discussed it again and decided to slightly modify rule 5 regarding qualification, based on what we have at the moment:
5. If a situation arises where three players are competing for two spots with the same number of points, equal head-to-head results, and a "circular tie," and this only occurs in one group, then the player with the higher seasonal rating at the end of the spring season will qualify in first place. If this indicator is also equal, then the permanent rating will be used. The second place will be decided in one match between the two remaining players (deadline – 1 week).
This seems to support "local talent" and still gives those who don't play in the seasonal league a real chance to qualify. The list of reports for calculating the rating is almost ready, but I haven't calculated it yet and don't know who will be the best in Group I.
