Player rating for offline Heroes 3 tournaments!

Friends, please explain what "grails" are, how they are calculated, what they are for, etc. I've been playing Heroes for a long time, but I've only participated in championships held online in clubs with a completely random setup. Recently, I came across this website and decided to join the ranks of its regulars... So, please help a newbie out.
