Well, considering that there are rarely more than 5 nights, that's only 2 roles, at best 3, and that's if they aren't killed/executed + other neutral roles. And the mafia needs to find a super role.

No, he chooses a victim. The newspaper reports that someone has fallen into a trap (without a nickname) and a clue is given. If the town guesses correctly, the name of the saved person is revealed; if not, the name of the killed person is revealed. (:
