Paradoxically, I didn't manage to do anything with diplomacy. They gave it to me in the 6th slot, and it just wouldn't level up. And there, either there wasn't enough money, or people just didn't want to join. I didn't have the strength to take the Key of Victory; both players had their cartographers unlocked. I also went in the wrong direction a bit (helped to pin them down). There was nothing else to catch.
