Children (and some adults) are now more self-conscious. Drawing the Russian flag is logical and correct because everyone will do it, but drawing a birch tree is already "dangerous"... Your girlfriend is not self-conscious, and that's why she says what she thinks, while children adapt to "everyone" or don't trust you enough.
