Tamika or Moandor are the best, in my opinion. At the beginning, you won't find anyone better than Tanta.

Tamika?... Moandor?!... How are they better than Galtran??? Tanta is good, of course, but he's a mage, and at the start, there's no one better than Galtran in Necropolis, because he brings a bunch of skeletons with him and also gives them a speed bonus.
