Let me tell you a secret about how this is done.
It starts with a desire to eliminate a powerful player. After an initial, quick, half-hearted attempt, a couple more people express the same desire. Without any real reason, just silly premonitions and personal problems like revenge, envy, past grudges, etc.
The powerful player starts acting inappropriately, which gathers votes from other people against him. Just as baseless, but informative.
Why informative? Because the mafia doesn't want to miss the chance to get rid of a powerful player. That's when all sorts of shenanigans from Lords and Dracosh happen.
