Man, you found the money for 3 computers, but can't find it for a UPS? It's one thing when hardware burns out due to wear and tear, or starts lagging, but it's a real bummer when it burns out due to power surges. It's just GG.
You don't necessarily need to buy some fancy UPS.

If you work in the relevant field, you can assemble a decent computer from old hardware for free (sometimes you don't even need the field - last week at our work, they were writing off equipment, and you could have assembled a couple of computers from the contents of the trash can), but you'll have to pay for the UPS.
