There's no need to click a second time. The route must be calculated first before the count can be performed. You could try disabling hero movement while Alt is held down, but I'm not sure if that's technically possible.
Ivor, what about assigning the function to Alt + right mouse button? IMHO, there would be far fewer accidental clicks...
