In my opinion, the ghost-vampire-dragon combination is the most advantageous because:
I) Ghosts have: better movement (than churchmen), illusion, aging, can fly over obstacles, are immune to negative morality (the Crown of Magic fixes this, if there is no Mind Shield:)), and they are replenished by necromancy!
II) Vampires have: better movement (than imps), life drain (the ability to resurrect the fallen), can fly over obstacles, are immune to negative morality (the Crown of Magic fixes this, if there is no Mind Shield:)), and they are replenished by necromancy!
III) Dragons have: protection from arrows, use fear, can fly over obstacles, are immune to negative morality (the Crown of Magic fixes this, if there is no Mind Shield:)).
IV) In addition to all this, when capturing a castle, you can recruit the castle's creatures and turn them into undead: skeleton-ghost-vampire-dragon!
(This is up to the player!)
Then I remembered the downsides, that "Spider Web Arrows," then the "Binding" potion, and the acid potion (weak, but effective) HURT THEM A LOT! :)
