Well, life is possible even without cloning, and you can live without healing too, but you definitely can't live without speed and slow spells! You might as well end your life by suicide ;)
and without curse and berserk too, especially when the opponent has more creatures than you do (I successfully managed to overwhelm armies that were 3-6 times larger than mine... :p)
