What does the universe consist of?

I believe that the universe is infinite. I simply imagine it as a limited amount of matter existing within an unlimited volume. Matter itself cannot appear from nothing or disappear into nothing, so its quantity must remain constant according to all the laws of physics. But this parameter does not affect the space occupied by that matter, because even if we look at familiar things, we can notice this difference. Take, for example, thermal expansion.
