That's just how it seems to you. But put yourself in his shoes: you're a town member, and suddenly you read that someone, not very familiar to you, is claiming your role! So now everyone will start believing him, but what if he's the Mafia?? Well... it's enough to make anyone crack... It's silly, of course, but understandable.
