Paradox or Riddle. Brain-training exercises.

There's a mug and a pot.
But it's unclear what position the mug is in; it's not clear how it's "floating" there.

How is it floating and not sinking? Something must be holding it up. Maybe it's in state "1," or maybe "2" or "3." Or am I missing something?
