It's raining heavily, the river has a strong current, and there's a boy drowning (being carried away by the water). His mother is running along the bank, shouting his name. A man sees this. He's walking along, under an umbrella, smoking a cigarette. He sees it and rushes to help. He pulls the boy out, asks the mother to give him a hand so he can climb out, but she doesn't care; she's hugging her son and trembling.
So the man died, when he could have just kept walking.
