In general, with postponed games, that's always how it's done. Simply because, for example, in the later stages, you need to keep a huge amount of information in your head (I'm not referring to the pathetic balance panics, of course). Sometimes, calculations are done cell by cell, and the game plan is for three or four days ahead, at least for good players, and if there's a time crunch...
Pete's case, apparently, is some kind of major exception.
And whether you're watching in single-player or multiplayer is completely irrelevant. Couldn't a hidden map hacker secretly peek at the map in any case?
P.S. Maybe there's a different etiquette in blitz games, but such games are usually not postponed.
