Technical issues with Heroes III.

I had something similar happen when a virus settled into the startup programs and overloaded the processor, causing everything to freeze. Check if your computer has any viruses.

I cleaned it up. Turns out, some nasty thing was hiding in the startup programs.
Now it launches in GameRanger.
Everything's fine now.

P.S. And what was Avast doing?
I installed Kaspersky. It cleaned up a ton of junk from my computer.
Hopefully, it's gone for good :)
Our provider offers a service – Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 for 90 rubles a month, and they say you can forget about viruses.
I didn't bother until I had a problem.
