Who has the archer stack right now?

I've always based my strategy on having 1-2 stacks of fighter units as cover, with single units to the left of them for flanking and drawing fire. Consequently, archers are positioned in the far-right stack, but I've noticed that many players use the opposite arrangement. Arguments for or against either position are welcome.
