If we change it and play at a different tempo, we will get confused later and won't be able to play it exactly the same way, so we can layer the tracks.

Musicians first write the rhythm section, and then the rest adapt to it. For example, Lord recorded the drums, sent them to me, I listen to them in my headphones and play along with that rhythm. Our recordings are combined, and the next person creates their part in the same way.
