I'm almost afraid to guess which month it actually is, because I've been waiting a long time to get the cyclops population up to at least a hundred to develop artifacts (although I was playing on easy).

You won't be able to increase their numbers. Your troops increase by +426 per week, while the cyclops grow by +n% per week! For example, in "Heroes of Might and Magic V," I calculated it to be 17%. So, the more troops there are in the neutral stack, the more they will increase. I sympathize, but you'll have to start over :(. And you need to complete the map in two, at most three months!
