Actually, "neko" simply means "cat" and has nothing to do with catgirls. I don't even know why Google returns a bunch of catgirl images when you search for "neko." Try typing ねこ (neko) or the kanji 猫 and see how many "catgirls" it gives you. Then, for comparison, you can try ねこみみ (nekomimi).
