Regarding the black screen and the game not launching on a laptop, I was given a suggestion on the Ubisoft forum, but I'm not very tech-savvy and don't understand what I need to do. Here's the original text:

To do this you just press the windows key, write "regedit" and then proceed to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers folder.

Right click on the graphicsdrivers and select the add DWORD option. Rename the new item that comes to "tdrLevel"
