Well, with a commander, there's a very large army. It also needs to be teleported, and the magical energy costs will be somewhat higher than for 1 cart of ore or crystals per day.
With gold, there are again too many variables: it depends on who you're playing as (for example, Orcs have a cheat totem that gives 250 gold for ANY battle, and it can be built in every city), it depends on what artifacts you find, and what stage of the game it is. But in the conditions of the same Heroes of Might and Magic III, if you had 1 mine for each resource and not much gold, it wouldn't save you much if you lost 1 of the mines, especially if it was the "main" resource needed to build high-level creatures.
