mana is needed in case the mages become too strong or the city is under attack. It often happened that mages died early on, especially in the beginning of the game, or they were just unlucky. Check out the 11th mage. Sky couldn't kill anyone throughout the entire game.
And I also like it when there's blood, guts, etc.
