I have no idea what criteria they use to determine the "favorite trees" of entire nations.
Regarding culture, it's not as absurd as it seems: it's possible that in some aspects, Ukraine is closer to the original Russian culture than we are, as the Empire loved to borrow from Europe. Another question is that Ukrainian culture underwent forced cultural assimilation during the Polish yoke.
But what does this have to do with it? The point was different:
we shouldn't forget that in Ukraine, Ukraine is considered the successor to Kievan Rus', while Russia is not.
