As a Mage. The Gate opening develops in the usual way – by increasing the skill level. But it has a low (if not zero) priority for the Mage (which Zephyr is), so it may not appear if you take other perks.
Wood – go outside the garrison and turn downwards – it will always be guarded by the Pit Lords who join.
