The Price of a Gift

If a person has a gift, such as the ability to heal others or predict events, will they inevitably have to pay a price for it, something valuable (their health, their happiness, etc.)? And if they don't use their gift, will there be no consequences?
This is important for me to know; I'll omit the details. Just answer if you know.
