Well, regarding the "evil and cruel" part, I disagree. I personally have respect for Genghis Khan (especially since he's my namesake). And they killed those (at least in Russia) who refused to worship their gods while paying tribute. The Tatars and Mongols had a saying about such people – "true men" or something similar... I don't remember exactly, but the point is the same.
