I don't see anything particularly good about this ability, except that it doesn't show how many Cyclops are still alive, but that doesn't seem very useful.

Actually, it's quite useful. Let's say a group of X Cyclops is attacked by enemies, and U of them are killed. Then, the next enemy attacks, and other creatures would retaliate with a strength equal to the remaining group Z. However, the Cyclops, before their turn, will retaliate with a strength equal to the original group X.
