No, guys, I can't agree with you. I don't think the developers were trying to move away from the established turn-based strategy genre and create something similar to a turn-based RPG. And even more so, the game wasn't an unsuccessful experiment that led to the collapse of 3DO. It was 3DO's financial difficulties that prevented them from completing the game, and they had to release such a "miracle" as Heroes of Might and Magic version 1.1, which didn't even support multiplayer.
The result was a truly disgusting mix of genres (they didn't want it, but it happened). Maybe "disgusting" is not the right word, it's a bit harsh, but you can't call it "tolerable"...
No one blames 4th for the collapse of 3DO, because no one forced them to make hasty decisions and actions.
I'm probably repeating myself again, but unfortunately, the 4th installment deviates from the Might and Magic series, which is why gamers don't like it. Let's say if this were the first game in the series, it would be very good, but since there are previous projects... they only get the status of an unsuccessful experiment (in the general opinion). ;)
