You're mixing up the types of books; it's not a "do-it-yourself" guide, but a work of fiction. There's a lot to think about, it's written in an amazing style, and there are hundreds (or even thousands) of interesting descriptions and reflections that are simply enjoyable to read.
When entering Moria, do you whisper "friend" in Elvish? Do you remember that stone and metal protect against the Threads? Do you remember to shout "NIGHT WATCH" while holding up a charged amulet and a desert eagle?

But in the book, the battle didn't feature many dragons or battles on broomsticks; logically, this shouldn't be in the movie either.
