Tactics for playing as the Sylvan faction.

Could you please explain why the Elf heroes have such high Knowledge and Defense stats, while their Attack stat is significantly lower? I usually play on large maps and develop them up to the point where they unlock their special skills, but even then, their Attack stat remains quite weak. Also, could someone share tactics for playing against mages on a large map?
