I don't know about London, but there are still street thugs in New York. A classmate went there this year on a "Work and Travel" program to earn some money. He and his friend went for an evening walk. Some guys approached them... One of them said, "Give me your purse." The guys didn't understand the last word and started asking what they wanted, "what-ing" them... In the end, the thugs waved at them and went on their way.
