In the same Heroes, for example, mages might get either gems or gold from the leprechaun's garden. Needless to say, this changes the game quite significantly?
On random at 160% - it doesn't change a damn thing :p You can easily gather all the needed resources on the first week anyway. That's why people play on 160%, there's much less luck involved. On 200% - it might make a difference, but only in rare cases with bad layouts (small respawn/strong guards). And for some poor fixed map where gems can only be obtained from the leprechaun, I'd think twice about whether to play at all, not just as mages. With equally skilled opponents in Heroes, it might come down to who got more cons/backpacks/hives/shipwrecks, but that's a different story :)
As for Vesnot - I haven't been playing long, still a complete noob, but I could hack and slash in the tournament as cannon fodder :)
