Did you play Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor? There, 3/4 of the enemies are undead with 50% resistance to slashing and piercing damage, so everyone uses maces and clubs, and clerics with Turn Undead are absolute beasts. The only exception is the coolest two-handed weapon in the game because it's +6 with a bunch of bonuses, and its base damage isn't 2d6, but 4d6! True, the game only has combat, but maybe that's for the better.
P.S. Clerics, not paladins, are more likely to use clubs. Even Blizzard, despite seemingly giving paladins bludgeoning weapons from game to game (scepters in Diablo 2, maces in Warcraft and WoW), contradict themselves by making swords the coolest paladin weapon, and Ashbringer is a prime example.
P.P.S. Bludgeoning is cool, but I still prefer swords.
P.P.P.S. You can crush skulls with more than just skeletons...
