A полуторник is neither a one-handed nor a two-handed sword; it is designed so that it can be conveniently used with one hand or two.

This is, in essence, an adaptation of a two-handed sword for mounted knights. A regular two-handed sword is too heavy for them, so a step was taken towards "ordinary" swords.
